First case of coronavirus infection in Alphen aan den Rijn

The first case of coronavirus (COVID-19) was confirmed on Monday, March 2 2020, in a resident of Alphen aan den Rijn. The coronavirus was identified through laboratory analyses, carried out by the Erasmus Medical Center. The case concerns a 5 year old child, who spent a holiday last week in Northern Italy. The child has not attended school since returning from holiday, it is in home isolation. GGD Hollands Midden has analysed the contacts of this patient.

Contact investigation

People the patient has been in contact with, are currently being approached by the GGD. They receive house rules and instructions on how to act when they experience physical symptoms. If these symptoms match the new coronavirus, they will also be placed in isolation and tested for COVID-19.

Prevent infection

RIVM and the GGD remain alert to possible new cases of the virus. They will enact the same protocol should new cases of coronavirus be found: isolation, contact investigation and ongoing monitoring of the patient. These measures reduce the chances of spreading the disease further in The Netherlands.
